ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses narratives of one pupil who had been permanently excluded from school, and of his parents and head teacher. The source of these narratives is a study comprising 40 pupils and their parents and head teachers, investigating factors relating to exclusion from school from a systemic approach (Rendall and Stuart 2005). In addition to their experience of exclusion, narratives were used to determine the presence, or absence, of ‘family resilience’, and for the purposes of this chapter parents’ narratives from the matched control group as well as excluded group are included.
