ABSTRACT

In this chapter I would like to share some personal reflections from my work in the Family Trauma Centre in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The initial role of the Centre was to provide psychological treatment for families affected by the Conflict in Northern Ireland, also referred to as the Troubles. As a systemically informed team we strived to create a context of safety in the therapy room whilst the societal context was often one of fear and ongoing trauma in an ever faltering peace process. Through creating a context of relative safety we were privileged to hear the narratives of children and families deeply affected by trauma relating to the civil conflict and its aftermath. This chapter shares the stories of several families and their narratives in a journey towards healing.
