ABSTRACT

Focusing on recent electronic genres Chicago Footwork, Shangaan Electro and Gqom, I analyse the ways in which the Internet creates musicking spaces, considering the role and agency of the local artist in an age of internationally connected online listening and production. These genres are connected, by both stylistic features of remixing and international online musicking as well as by the intensely physical nature of competitive local dances that drive the sounds and styles and have achieved international recognition more readily than local recognition, mainly via online networks. In this chapter, I consider some of the ways the physical agency of local artists can enhance virtual spaces of musicking.
