ABSTRACT

This chapter, situated in critical discourse analysis and ecolinguistics, summarizes research on how environmental issues are represented in political discourse. Research has often focused on the language of environmental policy at the national and global level, rather than locally. The approach is generally to investigate ways to frame environmental problems, labels for the social actors involved, and semantic role analysis—in particular, the construction of agency, whether for political leaders or for nonhuman animals. Readers who wish to carry out research in this area gain ideas from this chapter about potential topics and methods.
