ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the wider policy context in relation to the position of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual (LGBT) students in education, and draws on the findings of a small study which the author carried out as part of his MA in Inclusive Education at the Institute of Education. It focuses on the perspectives of young people themselves and on the importance of listening to their voices as a means of understanding their experiences and relating these to one's work in supporting inclusive education in schools and in the classroom. Schools are failing these young people, mostly by not even recognising and including their LGBT identity as valued members of the school community. The curriculum should include appropriate coverage of sexuality across all subject areas. Schools must tackle homophobia by adopting a whole-school approach to combating homophobic attitudes and the bullying that usually accompanies it.
