ABSTRACT

Inequality is on the increase in most countries. Combating this trend requires not only an understanding of its causes but also the development of effective counter-strategies. Some successful campaigns are analysed in the next chapter. A number of campaigns to rein in inequality, however, have proven rather unsuccessful in recent times. The German campaign ‘umFAIRteilen’ and the Swiss campaign to cap high salaries come to mind. Even in the showcase country for reducing inequality, Brazil under the Lula and Dilma presidencies, the improvements resulted from the redistribution of income within the working class and not from higher taxes on the rich (Lavinas, 2014).
