ABSTRACT

This chapter communicates our understanding of the extent to which openness and criticality are considered core aspects of research in Latvia, based on an analysis of theoretical findings and research resources in Latvia. It claims that the exercise of criticality and openness can enhance the quality of a research process. The aim of the research study was to reflect on and critically evaluate new and experienced researchers' educational research experience in the context of Latvia. It has to be remembered that Latvia has only recently emerged from Soviet rule and a learned culture of silence. The Strategies of Scientific Activity identify scientific research and creative activities as main conditions for the sustainable development of Latvia as a fully-fledged partner within the education arena of Europe. Considering the socio-economic conditions of Latvia, there is need for different kinds of support from the state, including the development of appropriate infrastructures, financial support and political decisions regarding a systemic development strategy.
