ABSTRACT

Environmental consumer subsidy programs subsidize consumers’ pro-environmental behaviors. Such programs need to ascertain (1) whether a certain behavior occurred and (2) whether the behavior was pro-environmental in nature. Previous chapters in this volume have discussed the rationales and effectiveness of subsidy programs that provide economic incentives to consumers. In this chapter, we will explore these two factors with respect to policy design. We also address the provision of information to consumers concerning the environmental impacts of the respective behavior.
