ABSTRACT

Why did Czechoslovakia declare independence on October 19, 1918? Because Edward Bernays, who is considered to be the father of modern public relations, advised the nationalist leader Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk that Sundays are generally slow news days, so the new nation would have a better chance of getting high profile coverage in the following day’s global newspapers if he waited until a Sunday to make the big announcement (Tye, 2002, pp. 87-88).
