ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights recent technological developments in visualisation domain that influence the operational practices of the construction sector. Many academics and practitioners and the R&D departments of large construction companies are interested in the capability and applicability of Information and Commination Technologies (ICT) for built environment practices. According to Turk, 'the first uses of computers in construction are reported in 1960s' and, over the years, integration of ICT in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry became an independent subject area within the AEC research domain. Since this first usage, many different ICT tools have been utilized in different areas of the construction industry, including data creation in the form of drawings, building information modelling (BIM), scheduling and budget information, data sharing, storing and updating data and utilizing complex data management and coordination systems. Visualisation of a proposed building or a structure can be one of the most noticeable ways of ICT integration in the construction industry.
