ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the state of the art on project extranets that addresses both the push and pull aspects in enabling a collaborative behaviour among team members executing multinational global construction projects. The construction industry is often hailed as the gauge of the global economy. From a value perspective, the industry contributes an estimated 9.8" towards gross domestic product (GDP) of the European Union (EU) economy. The use of information technology (IT) in the construction industry both in the UK and internationally is rapidly growing. This resurgence has further stepped up due to the rapid internationalization of construction activity involving global teams in practice requiring methods techniques and processes to harness global project collaboration. Project collaboration software improves design and construction processes through functions that expedite project communications, reviews and approvals; reduce errors and mitigate risk; improve work practices; and accelerate project processes from start to finish.
