ABSTRACT

A component of this breadth of contributions is the differences in spelling and nomenclature within the region, compounded by aspects of translation and Romanisation. Contributors have used the spelling and terms of their location, which in some instances results in multiple versions of the same name or term (e.g. beit/bait/bayt). Some contributions also include Hijri dates; when these are included they are accompanied by Gregorian. These aspects yet again highlight the great diversity across a region most often thought of as one homogenous cultural area.
