ABSTRACT

Although I do not feel responsible for the color of my skin, I must begin by acknowledging the myriad ways that fact has provided me with privileges not afforded to others all of my life. As an educator of elementary-aged children in schools that predominantly serve children and families of color, it is imperative that I fight to de-center whiteness in all that I do. It is within this context that I share my testimony that it is in fact possible to become a White educator who is conscious and effective.
