ABSTRACT

The preceding counter narrative is a tenet within Critical Race Theory (CRT), which contests the majoritarian narrative that is officially sanctioned and legitimized as "official knowledge," obfuscating minoritized experiences. CRT focuses on exposing and actively dismantling taken-for-granted, regnant racial ideologies and power relations. If students are diligent and "resilient", they too can gain access to the "American Dream" by attaining high school and university degrees. Yet, it is disturbing how barrio youths' "American dreams" are placed on hold by the socio-political/economic conditions they are forced to live under. Social justice cannot take place without a racialized sociopolitical/economic literacy. This precept addresses the notion of agency and our ability as individuals to make history by shaping our world to be more humane and just. A pedagogy of love is the author’s moral code and the overarching umbrella that author’s asset-based pedagogical approach is founded on.
