ABSTRACT

The close-up photography technique is generally accepted as the capture of images from approximately one-tenth life size to life size. Macro photography is the capture of images from 1:1 to 50x. Photography that is greater than or 50x is normally considered photomicrography. There are many methods used to create close-up images using basic equipment and a few accessories. One of the key needs in forensic documentation is the requirement to include a measurement device or calibration scale. There are several choices of close-up and macro lenses for most DSLR cameras. Some are fixed focal length while others zoom. The close-up and macro lenses are designed for this type of photography and will provide high-quality images with significant sample definition. Teleconverters are most commonly used with telephoto lenses so, for example, a 300mm f/2.8 with a 1.4x teleconverter will transform into a 420mm lens at f/4.
