ABSTRACT

The task of this chapter is to provide suggestions for encouraging research in dance/movement therapy (DMT) not only in the United States, but also in other countries where DMT may be developing or even flourishing. I am offering a model, loosely based on ecological systems theory (Bronfenbrenner, 1979), through which dance/movement therapists in any location may consider their challenges and conceive of appropriate action. Examples of how research has been supported by the American Dance Therapy Association are not offered as models of how it must be done, but as examples of how it has been tried in one particular country. No assumptions are being made that these methods will be effective in all circumstances. I leave it to our readers to discern the best approaches and create new ones for the unique contexts within which they are conducting research.
