Cultural heritage is a key policy domain through which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples seek protection of their values, practices and material objects. This chapter discusses the legislative systems in place across Australia for the management of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage. From this chapter, readers will gain an appreciation of the emergence of cultural heritage as a key policy domain for Indigenous peoples in Australia, its intersection with planning, and a more critical awareness of its limitations and assumptions. Brief case studies of Victoria and Queensland are provided.
