The higher education system in China started to expand in 1999 and has recently become the largest in the world based on the size of its student population. The gross enrolment ratio in China’s higher education reached 34.5 per cent in 2013, while it was merely 3.5 per cent in 1991 (MOE, n.d.). Given the enormous size and the speed of expansion in the Chinese higher education system, few organizational studies have addressed how university teaching is organized as one of the technical cores and how it is adapted throughout higher education massification and the catch-up race in the global ranking game.
