ABSTRACT

The Polish Museum of America (PMA) remains one of the major institutions in Chicago’s Polish community, perpetuating the city’s image of possessing a multitude of ethnic neighborhoods and cultural assets that make the city unique and attract tourism.1 Indeed, the Chicago metropolitan area is home to over 941,000 persons of Polish ancestry (Polish American Chamber of Commerce 2014, 2), and about 163,000 of them reside in the city of Chicago (United States Census Bureau 2014). These include persons whose grandparents or great-grandparents emigrated from Poland to Chicago, as well as recent immigrants. Although New York City has a slightly larger Polish population overall, Chicago claims the highest population of Polish immigrants in the USA (Paral and Norkewicz 2003).
