ABSTRACT

Think about a time when you have heard a familiar song and your body responded as if you were hearing that song in another time, in another place, at another age. You feel the breeze in your hair the same way you did on that fabulous day, or the sunlight on your skin, or maybe the punch in your gut or the quivering of your chin as grief and mourning wash over you—again and uncontrollably. Some people may be able to name particular songs that have this effect on them, others may be completely surprised when they are physically and emotionally saturated with embodied memories spontaneously provoked by the music.
