ABSTRACT

The concept of superdiversity, introduced by Vertovec in 2007, serves as a lens to understand rising complexities. But what exactly is the potential of superdiversity as a lens for (linguistic and other) research beyond existing concepts of multiculturalism or diversity? Superdiversity is analysed as a qualitative transition (the transformative diversification of diversity) and a process of normalisation of diversity, within a quantitative transition of increasing diversity with new migration layering upon older migration. Building upon Meissner and Vertovec, we distinguish the descriptive, methodological and practical potential of superdiversity, whereby the methodological potential remains the main challenge for research.
