ABSTRACT

In this chapter the authors describe a framework they have developed to inform and guide consultation practice with staff teams working with older people showing challenging behaviour. They identify different levels of context that inform requests for and expectations of consultation, as well as the practice or activity involved in consultation. Requests for consultation are often framed by referrers and consultees in terms of difficulties 'managing behaviour' or problems dealing with what the older person is 'doing', that is, at the level of action or what the authors refer to as inter-action, since included or implicit in the request is how people respond to the behaviour, relate to and affect each other, the interactions between people. Thus the consultees generated a rich collection of stories from 'multiple contexts of their lives'.
