ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to help educators in developing giftedness and talent in engineering by addressing the virtue and epistemological aspects in engineering education and learning. It discusses the nature of engineering knowledge and its relationship to giftedness, as well as intellectual virtues and its importance to the gifted learners. The chapter also shares the implementation experiences in Hong Kong pre-university engineering education for students who have been identified as gifted in science and mathematics. It examines the nature of engineering knowledge so as to facilitate a meaningful understanding of the educational needs of gifted engineering learners and to provide the most appropriate learning experience to nurture their talents. The chapter considers the three intellectual states proposed by Aristotle, namely scientific knowledge, craftsmanship, and practical wisdom, and discusses their relationship to the requirements in current engineering education standards.
