ABSTRACT

Even a cursory review of educational literature, however, quickly reveals that the construct of studio means different things to different authors, depending on the academic and professional cultures in which they live and work. The studios described in this book represent an equally broad view of studio, illustrating a wide variety of studio formats. Although the studio mode of teaching has indisputably been applied broadly, to build a deeper theoretical and practical understanding of how to teach in the studio mode, it is important to address a core question left largely unaddressed in the literature – what is studio?
