ABSTRACT
Portugal, a member of the European Union, is a small country located in southwestern Europe. A colonial empire for centuries (its largest and most notable holding was Brazil, which achieved independence in 1822), Portugal had given up most of its overseas territories by the mid-1970s. Sovereignty over the last of its colonies, Macau, ended in 1999 (CIA 2013).
