ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the environmental and climate ambassador programmes that some Danish municipalities have instituted in order to strengthen environmental and climate change mitigation efforts in local public institutions and administrations. It also provides an overview of the distribution of tasks within public administration and services in Denmark as background for the analyses. The first municipal programme that used the term climate ambassador was developed in the municipality of Hvidovre in 2008 and it focused on initiating climate efforts in its public institutions and administration. The empirical material for this chapter is different types of public documents and earlier analyses of the four environmental and climate ambassador programmes, and interviews and meetings with coordinators and ambassadors from the municipalities. Finally, the chapter also discusses the environmental and climate ambassador programmes from the theoretical perspectives of political reflective navigators and public spheres.
