ABSTRACT

The theory considered in this chapter remains relatively close to Weber’s formulations, while recognizing dysfunctions and elaborating in other ways as well. The theory developed by the Aston researchers is intertwined with a large body of research conducted by the theorists and those associated with them. Joan Woodward’s theory of the technological imperative (see Miner 2002) stimulated the Aston work initially, but there is much more to the program than that.
