ABSTRACT
The end of the Cold War brought dramatic changes for the U.S. armed forces. Rather than planning for major warfare in Europe, the military was faced with smaller regional wars and frequent deployments around the world. Three hundred thousand troops returned from Europe, and the size of the active force was reduced by about one-third.
