ABSTRACT

Displacement due to natural disasters is expected to increase in the coming decades due to increases in population, hazard exposure, and vulnerability to natural hazards, as well as increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. This chapter provides an overview of concepts and definitions of displacement, and discusses issues of relevance to planners, such as pre-disaster planning efforts by host communities, planning for non-displaced populations, land re-development and gentrification issues, and ongoing efforts at reducing vulnerability. Overall, planning is critically important for smoother disaster recovery processes and reductions in the duration and extent of displacement.
