ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the planning process for hazard mitigation and climate change adaptation in the United States. The chapter also discusses the key planning objectives and the policy-making process of both disciplines. The chapter highlights the shared goals of natural hazard risk reduction in both hazard mitigation and climate change adaptation policy making. The chapter identifies community resilience as the bridging framework linking hazard mitigation and climate change adaptation, to promote coordinated and effective local risk reduction actions. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the proposed integrated approach for local risk reduction from various natural hazards, including climate change influenced hazard events.
