ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a broad overview of the role of European neutrality in the Global Cold War. It examines the idea of non-alignment might erode their respective leadership roles in the major European military alliances. Both neutral and neutralist politics were a tightrope walk. The book investigates the evolution and interconnections of Finland and Yugoslavias foreign policies in the aftermath of the Second World War. It draws upon recently declassified documents from India, the United Kingdom and the United States to examine Indo-US propaganda and diplomacy at the Asian-African Conference in Bandung, Indonesia in April 1955, often regarded as a formative episode in the development of non-alignment. It explores the formation, organisation and policies of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in the context of the NorthSouth conflict during the 1970s.
