ABSTRACT

In 30 years’ time there will an extra 2-3 billion people living on this planet (Gerland et al. 2014). The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals seek to remove hunger and lift more people out of poverty (Chapter 2) and more people in developing countries are likely to move into the middle classes (cf. China since the mid-1990s; Tsang 2014). These trends in human population size and wealth will put even more pressure on the global agricultural system to produce more and dierent types of food (Godfray et al. 2010; United Nations Population Division 2011; Pingali 2015). Food security is, therefore, on the top of national and global and narratives concerning agriculture.
