ABSTRACT
In Section 2, I claim that Reid uses ‘active’ or ‘action’ as a summary for operations of various kinds and degrees: there are mental operations that are not actions in the strong sense, and other mental operations to which the concept of action and all its normative implications fully apply. We have a philosophical bias towards the latter, of which Reid is aware.
