ABSTRACT

Since, on PW, a proposition is a set of worlds, it might seem as if PW, like SP, entails that propositions have constituents: theirmembers. But the notion that a set’s members are its constituents (if this is understood in the sense of parts) is highly controversial; and in any case most advocates of PW do not talk in this way.11 Further, even if the “members” of a proposition on PW were its constituents, there wouldbe another crucial differencebetweenPWandSP: theorderof constituents on PW is irrelevant. Set x ¼ set y iff x and y have the same members. So, on PW, propositions are unordered sets – PWpropositionswould still be unstructured, even if their members were taken to be “constituents” or “parts”.
