ABSTRACT

Even if there were prospects for fixing this problem, further difficulties remain. First, structure-making violates Uniqueness. Prima facie, the only way for SP to comply with Uniqueness would be to postulate an additional part that encodes the arrangement of a proposition’s constituents. But it is difficult to see how a propositional constituent, on its own, could encode the positions of the other constituents, or show what in the proposition is being predicated of what.41 Plus, this would only push back the question ofwhat unifies propositional constituents – an analogue of the famous “third-man” objection to Platonic forms.
