ABSTRACT

So far, none of this should be objectionable to the theorist who accepts both (Meaning) and the thesis that the things we mean must be propositions, (Content). Such a theorist could accept this picture of the meaning of the relevant sentencetype, but just add the further requirement that when a speaker speaks literally – that is, when she asserts something – she must mean/intend to communicate some one, or more, propositions which are of the relevant type. But for reasons sketched in Section Two, this further requirement is not plausible.
