ABSTRACT
The word ‘physical’ is used in many different ways in philosophy. Assuming for argument that physicalism is true, this chapter proposes that ‘physical’ is best used to denote the fundamental stuff-nature of the universe, whatever that nature is. Given this highly natural use, a theory that locates consciousness among the fundamental physical properties seems the most plausible – parsimonious, elegant – theory of the nature of the universe.
