ABSTRACT

Introduction Globally, the solar photovoltaic (PV from here on) industry is one of the fastest growing of the major ‘green energy sectors’ and a vital part of green growth strategies (Sachs 2009). Accordingly, there has been a growth in the number of contributions from PV industryrelated publications (e.g. Caprotti 2009; Marigo 2007; Potash 2009), and a burgeoning emphasis on the PV industry in management (e.g. Jacobsson and Johnson 2000), economic (e.g. van den Heuvel and van den Bergh 2009), and strategy and policy-related publications (e.g. Marigo, Foxon, and Pearson 2008; OECD 2009; Tyfield and Wilsdon 2009; Aylett 2013). The literature, however, with the recent exception of Klitkou and Coenen (2013), has not been as quick to prioritize multi-actor, multi-spatial research into this segment of clean energy, surprising considering that firm activity and the institutions that shape their competitive environments are defined by embedded, place-specific relational logic (Dicken 2011; Whitley 1994).
