ABSTRACT

When supervision in the POTT framework follows a therapist's training in the POTT model on the use of self, there is a natural inclusion of the supervise's reactions, feelings and life experience in the discussion of the work with the client. Therapists who have not been through a formal training in the POTT model can undergo an abbreviated introductory training experience. The supervisor helps the supervise develop a clearer conceptualization of the signature theme and its roots, along with possible implications for conducting therapy. The supervisor's task is to help amplify the supervise's self-awareness within the therapeutic relationship, and guide the therapist to use that self-awareness consciously and purposefully in the therapeutic process. Self-awareness and self-monitoring in our clinical relationships will inevitably reflect back on our personal lives. The supervisor takes from supervises' personal lives to help them improve clinical performance, and the supervises take from their clinical insights to better their personal lives.
