ABSTRACT

After China’s new leader Xi Jinping took office in November 2012, an ideological tendency with a Maoist imprint has become more visible in policy-making. This tendency is not a simple revival of Maoist practices, but a re-appropriation suited to new political goals. In the near future, internet governance in China is likely to combine Mao-style mass campaigns with the mobilization of law and civil society to proactively mold online expression and behavior.
