chapter  4
Winning the Peace
Pages 34

The Book of Change features sixty-four hexagrams for prognostication. The first hexagram is qian, heaven or the creative principle. Its six lines employ the metaphor of the dragon’s progress. From the first and bottom line, “The submerged dragon refrains from action,” it ascends to the fifth, “The flying dragon holds the sky,” the zenith that has come to be identified with emperors. The hexagram does not stop there, however. Its sixth and top line states, “The overstretched dragon has regrets.”
