Futures for academic development


After an analytic history of academic development, the chapter offers a rationale for considering the future via scenarios. Scenario elements include the increasing power and ubiquity of computing; the need for play and creativity; individualised learning in mass higher education; a possible de-coupling of current higher education functions; the rise of just-in-time and lifelong education, training and CPD; the increased blurring of and collaboration between development functions; unpredictable disruptions and our responses; showing our cost-effectiveness; a stronger discipline focus; the further professionalising of teaching and development; the possible wider use of contracts for teaching and development; and futures for workshops. We conclude with suggestions on how we should conduct ourselves as developers.
