Risk taking is a personality trait that can lead to different kinds of negative behaviours which are harmful to students. Therefore, this chapter will fi rst of all look at the defi nitions of risk taking based on the different studies that have been done in the fi eld of education. Then, we will examine how risk taking is developed and fi nd out what factors may lead students to have high risk taking. The chapter will also look at the negative consequences of how different cultures have different attitudes and perspectives of risk taking. After that, this chapter will focus on risk taking of Hong Kong students and suggest strategies for school counsellors in Hong Kong to lower the risk taking of students. Moreover, this chapter will discuss, from the counselling perspective, what school counsellors can do to help students evaluate different situations in order to take appropriate risks.
