ABSTRACT

This chapter explores several broad trends that have provided the context for magazine education. It then looks at the literature associated with teaching students about magazines specifically and at magazine education, both within the larger contexts of print media education and journalism and mass communication education, which extends beyond teaching professional skills. The chapter also explores the pedagogical relationship between magazine education and the emergence of digital media and on-line journalism, also as evidenced in the literature. Magazine education has always been a small slice of overall journalism education, and that slice, given the new developments in journalism generally and journalism education specifically, is getting smaller. The most comprehensive compilation of research into magazines to date is The American Magazine: Research Perspectives and Prospects, and the most comprehensive literature review of pedagogy devoted to magazine education appeared in that volume.
