ABSTRACT

For nearly a hundred years, Public Service Media (PSM) have been intimately associated with and thrived on a series of technological innovations: radio, television, FM, portable receivers, satellite, cable – just to name a few. They have revolutionized mass communication, making the broadcast of audio and video the dominant media both in terms of the number of users and the time spent on them. In a European context, radio and television have been the technical prerequisites for the unique role publicly owned media have played in the dual, commercial/public service media market.
