ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of the forming and orienting stage of group work in schools. Provided are descriptions of primary tasks that are accomplished during the forming and orienting stage, discussion of responsibilities of the group leader during this stage, and a case example that illustrates what might occur during an initial group session. Specific techniques include using enthusiasm, drawing out, holding the focus, shifting focus, cutting off, and journal writing.
