West German industrial relations

Industrial relations in West Germany have been subject to similar changes and pressures to those which have marked developments in other industrial countries of Western Europe. The predominant factors influencing the development of in­ dustrial relations, since the beginning of the eighties, were the permanent high unemployment figures, around 2 million, the accelerating pace of the introduction of the new technology, and the shift in economic policy after Helmut Kohl's government replaced the social-liberal coalition of Helmut Schmidt in October 1982.
