Relations between the two German states

David Childs Those who remember the Germany of Adenauer and Ulbricht or even of Kiesinger and Ulbricht can still feel surprised to see Kohl and Honecker smiling broadly at each other on recent photo­ graphs. During their first twenty years of existence the two German states took up positions utterly opposed to each other and certainly until Willy Brandt became Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic in 1966 there seemed little chance of much ending.
