Who is speaking? The Indignados as political subjects

ByEmmy Eklundh Reply by Ernesto Castañeda

Over the past years, several parts of the world have seen an increase of protest movements. Indeed, these have arisen in the wake of the economic crisis that keeps on affecting these countries, and the protests have a clear anti-austerity profile. Particularly in Spain, Greece and Portugal, people have taken to the streets to demonstrate their discontent with the state of public affairs, and this has manifested itself through organisations such as Democracia Real YA! (Real Democracy Now) and La Plataforma de los Afectados por la Hipoteca (Platform for the Mortgage Victims), which form part of the Indignados movement.
