ABSTRACT

educating cartographers, the emphasis has always been placed on the practical dimension, which was directly linked to the technology of map design and map publishing. In the course of the advance in cartographic research and the emergence of courses of cartography at universities in the second half of the twentieth century, the scientific aspect of educating cartographers has become equally important. Teaching artistry in cartography is related to the analysis and comparison of graphical approaches adopted by publishing houses and old schools of cartography, especially in dealing with manuscript maps. At the beginning of the educational path stands a candidate for studying cartography: a person fond of maps, a user of school atlases, tourist maps, and open map portals, and often capable of nimbly navigating virtual maps in computer games. They are attracted to Geographic Information System-Global Positioning System (GIS-GPS) technologies, multimedia presentations of geographical space, and mobile devices with augmented reality.
